What are the Doshas?

Ayurveda categorizes the elements into 3 doshas: Vata, Pitta, Kapha

The three doshas are the physiological energies of the body that are responsible for all biological and psychological functions. It is the interplay between theses doshas that is responsible for both body type and personality.

Vata: Vata is created by the elements of Air and Ether. Vata governs all movement in the body and mind: nerve impulses, circulation, respiration, and elimination, rapid thought process. The element of Air is the idea of motion and Ether is the idea of space. Together, Air and Ether are cold, light, dry, subtle and mobile. If you have a predominance of Vata in your nature or imbalances, these qualities will reflect in your body and mind. Overall, Vata brings lightness to the body and it brings enthusiasm and creativity to the mind.

Pitta: Pitta is created by the elements of Fire and Water, however, mostly fire. Pitta governs temperature, metabolism, digestion, and all chemical reactions in the body. Fire brings the quality of heat, transformation, illumination, while the Water adds smoothness and fluidity. Together, Fire and Water are hot, light, slightly oily, and sharp. If you have a predominance of Pitta in your nature or imbalances, these qualities will reflect in your body and mind. Overall, Pitta brings intelligence to the mind and shows in an overall moderate body structure.

Kapha: Kapha is created by the elements of Earth and Water. Kapha governs structure, protection, lubrication, and nourishment to the body and mind. Earth brings the quality of solidity and stability. Water is the quality of fluidity and cohesion. Together, Earth and Water are heavy, moist, cool, soft and solid. If you have a predominance of Kapha in your nature or imbalances, these qualities will reflect in your body and mind. Overall, Kapha brings stability to the body and compassion to the mind.
